I saw this article and one comment jumped out at me: “some members of minority groups have said they fear they would feel unwelcome.” I don’t know if it is actually true or not but I have heard this rationale for all sorts of things and see it as an excuse no matter who is saying it or about what. Life is a challenge and we, people, have the ability to rise only through facing our challenges.
On the National Parks, simple truth: Nature is bigger than the human race. aside from physical survival skin color for all creatures, us included, is irrelevant. Physical strength, wits and determination matter. I have been to some of the parks and they are amazing enough, life enriching enough that anyone “worried” about anything is really saying: I don’twant to see new things, experience new things or meet new people.
That is arrogant and ridiculous. Go to the parks nearest you and the ones farthest away. No more excuses. Said to everyone. Nature enriches the human soul and we have some of the most enriching places in the world right in our borders and close to free for everyone to enjoy. Get over yourself and just go! Then tell me about it. Tell the world about it. Oh, and take your family if you have one, your friends if you don’t or meet some new friends there if you just take yourself. But GO!!!!
(and to any preachers out there, you have a great opic for your sermons here since Jesus himself–and most other spiritual figures–spend many days in the wilderness)
